Patrick Breiner Trio’s New Compositions (Inspired by Henry Threadgill)

Our first Thursday Night Jazz concert of December welcomes saxophonist and composer Patrick Breiner—a fervent supporter of the local music scene and musician himself—presenting a suite of all-new compositions. These new compositions are inspired by saxophonist and Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Henry Threadgill, a man known for his tendency to push the envelope, who developed a new sound by basing his harmonies and melodies on intervals (rather than chords).

Patrick will play all the instruments in his arsenal, which include the saxophone, clarinet, and bass clarinet. Joined by two pianists, the trio will also bring the sounds of the melodica to the Alphabet City stage.

About the Artist:

Patrick Breiner is a saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer in Pittsburgh, PA. He helped found the Tough Pill concert series, held on third Thursdays at the Government Center, which is rapidly approaching its three-year anniversary! Sonic collaborations include: Battle Trance (New Amsterdam / NNA Tapes), VAX (pronounced “fasjsh”), and the Pittsburgh Composers Quartet. In addition to his musical undertakings, Patrick is sometimes a theater/dance/puppetry performer and collaborator. Patrick is a Vandoren Artist.
